Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a physical therapy system that greatly improves performance and reduces musculoskeletal pain. AIS has been designed so effectively that it is used by a wide range of practitioners in different fields of physical healthcare.

Today, many of the World’s Top Athletes incorporate AIS into their training as do occupational and physical therapists working with elderly and post operative care patients.

Unlike other stretching, the AIS technique holds a stretch for no more than two-seconds to bypass the stretch reflex mechanism and facilitate the flow of nutrient rich blood to the musculoskeletal system. This process works with the neuromuscular system to reduce the risk of injury to the joints, muscles or connective tissues. The active phase of the stretch ensures that the patient does most of the work and closely follows one of the most important rules of stretching, Reciprocal Inhibition!

Improve your flexibility and athletic performance.

Optimise your biomechanics to reduce risk of injury.

Rehabilitation from injuries and recurring injury assessment .

Treat chronic pain syndromes.

Promote overall wellness by increasing fluid and energy circulation in the body.

Bowen is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation. Bowen therapy is performed on the superficial and deep fascia. The fascia, or soft tissue, is the part of the connective tissue that envelops, separates and influences every organ and tissue in the body.

The Bowen technique is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly and for any musculoskeletal or related neuromuscular complaint. It is a holistic treatment that treats the whole person and aims to treat the cause of problems, rather than the symptoms.

Dr. Carolyn Goh is our medically qualified Bowen practitioner at Be Urban Wellness. In addition to a Medical Degree, Carolyn also holds a Bachelors in Engineering, a Masters in Bioengineering as well as a PhD in Bioengineering.

Whilst completing her PhD at Imperial College London in the Analysis of Infant’s Heart Rate Signals and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, her passion for healing led to her embarking on a medical degree. On this journey, she discovered the Bowen Technique and was struck by the healing potential of this therapy.
